Depending on individual circumstances, the Kendall County Coroner permits Care Facility Staff to report in-facility deaths directly to our office rather than requiring EMS to respond. Typically this will be for residents with significant medical histories and/or a documented decline. The attached document (below) outlines the guidelines for directly reporting a death in your facility, as well as contains a form which can be used by your staff to record information that will be requested by the on-call investigator.

NOTE: The ability to direct-report deaths is a courtesy, not a requirement. Nothing in these guidelines prevents Care Facility Staff from electing to contact 9-1-1 or emergency services upon discovery of an in-facility death, nor does it prevent the on-call investigator from conducting a formal on-scene investigation if deemed necessary.
